I designed and illustrated this craft gin label for Hermanus Brewery, based in Cape Town, South Africa. The spirit is a handcrafted product produced near the coastal fishing village of Hermanus, known for its natural beauty and rich maritime heritage.

“Hemel-en-Aarde,” meaning “Heaven and Earth” in Afrikaans, takes its name from the well-known valley in the Overberg region.

The illustration draws on this meaning as a visual metaphor. Clouds represent “Heaven” (Hemel), sitting above the Helderberg Mountains, while crepuscular rays shine down to highlight the product name. The composition is grounded by the coastal setting below, where the ocean, home to Hermanus’ iconic whales, completes the scene and anchors the design in its place of origin.
